Dear Neighbor,

I’m writing with a time sensitive redistricting update and to invite you to testify THIS Friday, November 5th at 12 p.m. at a virtual hearing; sign up here. This week, the Subcommittee on Redistricting released three “Discussion Maps” that were submitted by residents. Each map includes different options for how the lines could be redrawn. These are not the final three options for our wards; however, it is likely that the Subcommittee will select components of various maps to compose a final map. You can read more about the maps here.

We know that the lines of each Ward will likely change and that Ward 2 will likely grow adding more residents. We are currently within the appropriate population range – but at the low end of the range. I love all the neighborhoods in Ward 2 and hope that we can keep them together, and I also will welcome any new neighborhoods that may be added.

Keeping communities together and not arbitrarily drawing lines through neighborhoods is an important consideration. We know this has happened in past redistricting and I’m hopeful and confident that we can avoid this. This is one of the reasons why I am troubled to see parts of North Dupont Circle and Chinatown removed from Ward 2 in some of the “Discussion Maps.” The North Dupont Circle community has extensive ties and shared interests with the greater Dupont Circle community. Excising this part of Ward 2 would arbitrarily cut off the LGBTQQIA+ community that has such a rich history and pronounced presence in North Dupont. In addition, bifurcating the Chinatown community would draw a line through this tight knit community which has shared interest with ANC 2C and Penn Quarter.

While the Discussion Maps have been released, it is not too late to share YOUR ideas on redistricting! A final, citywide redistricting hearing will be held on Friday, November 5, at noon. Please sign up to testify or submit testimony to make your preferences known as the Subcommittee is considering many changes. You can find out how testify at this hearing and watch the livestream here. Those who wish to testify must sign up no later than 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, by providing their information using this link.

My goal remains to ensure that Ward 2 neighborhoods stay together and contiguous and that we are inclusive to as many perspectives as possible.

Yours in Service,

Brooke
